Artist Statement

My favorite newspaper comic strips growing up were Calvin & Hobbes, Peanuts, Bloom County, and last, but not least, The Far Side by Gary Larson. I was endlessly amused by the complete absurdity and playfulness of his single panel strips.

I’ve also been a huge fan of Edward Gorey most of my adult life, so the combination of unearthing this old sketch from many years ago along with ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’ book inspired me to complete this idea from what feels like another lifetime.

I’m not sure what is worth describing about the piece. It’s straight forward in the telling. If only the roles were reversed, there’d be no reason to sigh.
