Artist Statement
English translation: Death Awakens Us.
I approach the notion of death in the tradition of Dia de los Muertos. Death’s transformation is represented from the fading of embodiment into decorated remains then deconstructed and reabsorbed into the fabric of the universe.
I’ve always loved the meanings behind Dia de los Muertos, and I hope I captured the reverence, tragedy, magic, and wisdom of the sacred day. It’s not easy to represent grief and hope in the same image.
